The US construction industry has been consistently booming for the last decade, but there is a lack of skilled construction workers. Of 2,700 contractors, 91% say they have difficulty finding skilled workers. This is where we come in! F&S has created multiple opportunities to ensure those interested in construction have the right tools and abilities to succeed. Our company’s purpose of going above and beyond is to ultimately give passionate people an opportunity to learn, and to keep skilled and talented construction workers in this field of work. F&S Building Innovations has taken deliberate steps to address this extensively over the last 13 months through a registered DOLI Apprenticeship Program, development of a Train-the-Mentor program AND…. development of Build Smart Institute which will be opening in mid to late 2020!

In May of 2020, the F&S Team was awarded the following: Platinum- Best Home Design/Building Firm; Platinum- Best Commercial/Development Firm; GOLD- Best Home Restoration Firm; & GOLD- Best Kitchen & Bath Contractor. Beginning in 1974, Roanoker magazine is the longest published city magazine in Virginia and is read by 68,000 Roanoke residents. We are so honored to receive these awards and continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.
This beautiful 56,000 square-foot church sits on 162 acres of land. In September 2017, F&S Building Innovations began construction on this stunning church facility. The 2-year scheduled construction was completed in March 2020. Not only does this church have an extraordinary view, it also includes a coffee shop, bookstore, gymnasium, and an auditorium that seats up to 800 people. The church facility is Phase 1 of a larger master plan for the property situated in the Smith Mountain Lake community.
The F&S Building Innovations Team holds quarterly meetings – this is an opportunity to share accomplishments with the team and exciting things happening within the company. At F&S, our team is treated like family. Though we are constantly adding new members, in our quarterly meeting in March of 2020 we were so excited to have introduced seven new members, including three new project managers and a student apprentice.
Have you always wanted to learn about construction trade positions? Or do you want your kids to learn about construction? Build Smart Institute (BSI) is the solution! Build Smart Institutes key objective is to educate, train, and place career-ready individuals into construction positions. This institute will provide programs for a wide range of age groups- from middle school career exploration through seasoned construction professionals seeking career advancement opportunities.
In February 2020, the F&S Building Innovations Team was excited to be awarded Best General Contractor in LakerMagazine. This was the 19th Annual “Best of Smith Mountain Lake” awards, and we are very pleased to be a recipient. The magazine went through 74 different categories including: Business, food, lifestyle, activities, organizations, events and entertainment.
A BIG 2020 accomplishment! We are thrilled to announce that F&S Building Innovations took GOLD for Best General Contractor in the Smith Mountain Laker Magazine’s ‘Best of SML 2020’. F&S Building Innovations originally started at Smith Mountain Lake in 1976. F&S provides a wide range of construction services including custom homes, home renovations, commercial renovations and ground up construction.
In January 2020, F&S Building Innovations exhibited at the Greater Roanoke Home & Garden Show. We are pleased to announce that the F&S Team brought home the Exhibit Excellence Award! The Garden show exhibits every year and is an event that displays the latest products for your home and garden. This is a terrific event that allows people to go to one place, and see what multiple companies have to offer. We are thrilled to, once again, achieve the Exhibit Excellence Award!
Our community is valued by the F&S team! In December 2019, F&S Building Innovations teamed up with Bin There Dump That collecting food for Feeding America Southwest Virginia. There are 1 in 8 people in Southwest Virginia that are experiencing hunger -Feeding America Southwest Virginia provides food for those in need due to the loss of a job, inadequate fixed incomes or acute illness. This is a great way to give back to the people in our community.
